Colinton Tunnel Photography Competition 2020

Terms and Conditions

  • Background

We, The Colinton Tunnel (Registered Scottish Charity Number SCO48476) (“the Charity”) are organising this competition to celebrate Robert Louis Stevenson Day 2020, and the completion of the Colinton Tunnel Mural.

The overall winner will receive a prize of a £50 voucher redeemable at Dantes Restaurant, and their photograph will feature in selected future promotional material, merchandise or other productions (“productions”) of the Charity. Four runners-up will also have their photographs feature in selected productions.

Any profits from the sale of productions featuring these photographs will be used exclusively to support maintenance of the mural and future community engagement activities.

Entries to the competition must be submitted by 31 December 2020 (the “Closing Date”).  

  • Eligibility

The competition is open to legal residents of the United Kingdom (an “Eligible Person”), excluding Board Members of the Charity, anyone else associated with this competition and their families.

Entrants under the age of 16 must obtain the consent of a parent or guardian prior to submitting any images. Any entry by someone under 16 will not be deemed complete unless the following information is provided:
i.    the child’s name;
ii.   the child’s age;
iii.  the parent/guardian’s name; and,
iv.  a contact telephone number and email.

3.    How to enter
All photographic images entered must:
i.  feature a photograph of the Colinton Tunnel Mural, or an element therein

ii: be in colour

iii: be of high resolution

i: the entrant’s name

ii. a contact telephone number and email

iii: entrants under the age of 16 must provide the additional information outlined in clause 2

No more than two (2) images may be submitted per person. If more than two (2) images are received, such entries may be deemed void and such entrant may be disqualified from the competition.

The competition must be entered in each entrant’s own name; it may not be entered on behalf of anyone else.

No bulk, software-generated, automatic, or third-party entries shall be accepted.

We regret that we are unable to accept postal entries. Late, incomplete or corrupt entries will not be accepted. 

4.    Originality; permissions
All images submitted must be the work of the individual submitting them and must not have been published elsewhere (excluding social media) or have won a prize in any other photographic competition.

It is the responsibility of each entrant to ensure that any images they submit which have people in them have been taken with the consent of anyone who is identifiable in that image and the consent of their parent/guardian if they are under 16 and that they have been advised of the purpose of the submission and that their photograph may be published by the Charity.

Entrants must ensure that the photographs they are submitting are their own work, that they own the copyright for them and that they do not infringe the copyright or other rights of any third party or any laws.

5.    The prize 
The winner will have their image printed on selected productions of the Charity and receive a prize voucher for £50 for use in Dantes Italian Restaurant, Bridge Road, Edinburgh.

Four runners-up will have their winning image featured on selected productions.

All prizes are non-transferable and there are no cash alternatives.

6.    Judging and Notification
All valid entries made will be judged to see which is the most visually appealing. 

The winners will be chosen by independent judges. The decision of the judges is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Winners will be notified by email or phone. If a winner cannot be contacted or is not available, the judges reserve the right to disqualify them and select another winner from the eligible entries which were received before the closing date.

The Charity’s decision is binding in all matters relating to this competition, and no correspondence shall be entered into.

The winner will be announced on the Colinton Tunnel website and associated social media.

7.    Intellectual property rights
Entrants will retain copyright and moral rights in their submitted images however, by entering, all entrants:
a)    grant the Charity non-exclusive rights to use the images to promote or celebrate the competition the images were submitted to or for similar future competitions within a five year period of the winners of the competition being announced; 
b)    agree that the use referred to at Clause 7(a) above may include publishing, displaying or otherwise reproducing the images (whether on the internet, on social media, in productions, or otherwise) or for promoting and celebrating the competition or similar future competitions; and,
c)    agree that the Charity may contact them using the contact details they provide to discuss potential use of the images beyond the above. Such discussion will be independent from the competition and will not affect entrants’ chances of winning. 

d) grant the Charity a no-cost royalty free licence to utilise their photograph for use as outlined above.

8.    Limitation of liability
The Charity excludes all liability for any losses and/or damages of whatever nature and howsoever arising to the fullest extent permitted by applicable laws.


The Colinton Tunnel complies with the GDPR principles, which require that personal data is processed lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner in relation to individuals; collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes; and that it is not further processed in a manner that is incompatible with those purposes.  Please also see our Privacy Policy at

10.    General
All information detailing how to enter this competition forms part of these terms and conditions. It is a condition of entry that all terms and conditions are adhered to. Submission of an entry will be taken to mean acceptance of these terms and conditions.

In consideration of being awarded the prize the winner may be required to take part in publicity and their name and county may be published on the Colinton Tunnel website as well as wider media reporting on the competition. 

Scottish law applies to these terms and conditions and the exclusive jurisdiction of the Scottish Courts shall prevail.
